Battersea Power Station becomes Mount Battersea on 26th and 27th October as dance, hip hop and snowboarding’s elite converge by the Thames for the return of the Relentless Freeze Festival. Live music, World Cup Snowboarding, International Skiing and traditional alpine style bars makes this festival cooler than a dead penguin. A stirring list of acts includes Public Enemy (Flava Flav got his visa in time), hip hop legend Grandmaster Flash, DJ Shadow and A-Yo (Mark Ronson vs Zane Lowe) whom Ronson likens to the “antithesis of fucking dogs that shoot bees out of their mouths!” Well it is Halloween weekend – which is conveniently this year’s theme. Amongst the busy two day line up is not only a wealth of musical talent, but the very best of the world’s skiers and snowboarders. This year the Helgason brothers, Victor de la Rue, Jossi Wells, Jacob Wester and Henrik Harlaut will be among those competing. For a first this year, Freeze will now be open to any rider – allowing an unrestricted field to the UK’s only international snowboard event. That’s right, you could be returning home a Snowboarding World Champion – it could happen right? No? Well I’ll see you in the Apres Ski Bar. Kicking off each day in Desperados will be the notorious Rebel Bingo club providing their mutated version of bingo with prizes, filth and enough crayola ink on your voice to compete with the alcohol in your liver, “This is not bingo. It’s Rebel Bingo. We know it’s wrong. But it feels so right. And they can’t stop us”.
If dancing and drunkenly competing against world champion snowboarders doesn’t keep you warm there’s always the cinema. Presented by O’Neill, the 200 seater indoor cinema also provides has what Odeon have carelessly neglected all these years – a bar. With a character soaked in an autumnal/winter temperament you’ll find alpine style bars, gourmet food and drink as well as a shopping village to stock up on all your ski needs. If you didn’t get those Glastonbury tickets (one sympathises) then Freeze should numb the pain until those infamous resales go up.
The whole event comes to a close at 10.30pm, though being in central London there will be after parties – keep an eye on Freeze’s social network channels for updates.
